Latest DfE returns show recorded energy expenditure per pupil fell in matched academy and maintained-school cohorts in 2024/25. They do not show that buildings used less energy.
The national numbers point in opposite directions: 726,000 fewer state-funded pupils by 2031, yet rising SEND demand and special-school rolls. The opportunity is real, but only local, needs-led estate evidence can show whether spare capacity can become usable provision.

From September 2027, some new fixed-term school energy contracts must provide for smart or advanced metering. This is not a new duty on every school today, but it brings contract dates, meter condition, site access and energy data into one preparation cycle.
DfE's 7 September guidance confirms that academy trusts must now reassess most leases under the Charities SORP 2026 model. The change does not make leasing undesirable or automatically reopen every consent.

The 2026 academy handbook changes the renewal test. Trusts need a defensible account of their route, equivalent value and contract risk before the next notice deadline arrives.
The duty commenced on 30 September. For schools, the immediate challenge is making requests, decisions and follow-through reliable without turning safeguarding into indiscriminate data circulation.

The DfE Schools Gigabit Broadband programme offers qualifying schools a route to fibre where suitable commercial or other publicly funded provision has not reached them. School Connection analysis identifies 1,656 open English schools in a high or elevated connectivity-pressure cohort, with rural and geographically harder-to-serve communities strongly represented.
Operating consequence: A stronger connection is valuable because it changes what a school can reliably depend on. The opportunity is not simply faster internet.
