A new pilot will let state-funded schools ask an external reviewer whether Ofsted handled a complaint fairly and reasonably, with access to unredacted inspection evidence. It is a significant change, but the reviewer recommends: HMCI retains the statutory decision.

Today’s independent interim evaluation gives leaders evidence of improvement and continuing strain. The practical response is to examine the inspection experience without allowing preparation to consume the school.
The performance-measures consultation remains an unresolved planning boundary on the official page. Schools can protect breadth, staffing and family confidence without presenting proposals as settled rules.
The updated school inspection documents are in use. Leaders need a coherent account of how barriers are identified, support reaches teaching and provision changes when it fails.
At the 9 September evidence cut-off, Ofsted’s scheduled 10 September release had not yet been published. When issued, it should expand the evidence available under the renewed framework without becoming a national school-quality census.
A new IDSR comparison can reveal performance hidden by national averages. It is a useful question-generator, but neither a neutral description of a school nor a verdict on its effectiveness.
The cohort expected to start GCSE courses in September 2027 is back in school. The proposed accountability model is detailed enough to test – but it is not final policy.

The multi-year award gives schools a firmer planning assumption. Leaders still need to reconcile payroll, funding and workload without quietly reducing the support that makes teaching sustainable.
The 2026 academy handbook changes the renewal test. Trusts need a defensible account of their route, equivalent value and contract risk before the next notice deadline arrives.
