Faster outside, fragile inside: the school network readiness test
External gigabit capacity cannot repair a weak internal network. The next readiness question is whether cabling, switching, wireless, power and segmentation can carry a reliable, secure experience to every part of the school.
The answer in brief
Readiness is the route from the handoff point to the person using the service.
The DfE broadband standard explicitly identifies internal cabling, switches, routers and wireless access points as factors in school connectivity. The wireless and switching standards add expectations around coverage, capacity, central management, monitoring, security and lifecycle maintenance.123
A network can pass an external speed test and still fail in a classroom, hall, safeguarding office or trust service room. Readiness needs evidence from the places and services that matter, not only from the circuit handoff.12
- Start with user journeys and critical rooms, then map the technical path behind them.
- Treat coverage, capacity, control and security as separate checks.
- Keep power, lifecycle, segmentation and monitoring in the same readiness file as Wi-Fi performance.
01 / Map the user path
The school network should be tested where the work happens.
A useful map follows a teaching session, a safeguarding report, an attendance workflow and an identity-dependent cloud service from device to application. It shows where contention, dead zones, old equipment, unsupported firmware or a single route can change the outcome.23
- Record site plans, coverage surveys, capacity assumptions and known dead zones.
- Identify the switches, access points, firewall and power dependencies behind critical areas.
- Test with representative devices and real user journeys, not one idealised laptop.
02 / Control and security
A modern network is also a managed control surface.
Central management, alerting, firmware updates, secure administration, VLANs, access controls and appropriate wireless protection matter because the internal network carries identities, safeguarding controls and school data. Visibility is part of resilience: leaders need to know when capacity, coverage or security has changed.234
03 / Acceptance and lifecycle
A network is ready when it can be supported after the project team leaves.
The acceptance record should include configuration ownership, asset identity, support route, firmware and warranty position, power and environmental dependencies, monitoring evidence, security settings and a plan for replacement. The trust-wide question is not whether every site is identical; it is whether every site is understood and supportable.34

The programme connects broadband signals to the internal network because ‘available’ and ‘usable’ are different states. Site-level readiness remains a local evidence question: coverage, configuration and operational testing cannot be inferred from national data.12
Only human-approved, public-safe intelligence can appear here. Private candidates, commercial signals, contacts, opportunity values and internal scores are never exposed through School Connection.

- DfE standards describe expected practice; they do not measure a particular site's coverage or performance.
- A heat map is a point-in-time view and does not replace capacity, roaming, security or incident testing.
- A trust-wide dashboard can conceal local weakness if site evidence is not kept current.

The DfE's new gigabit programme is an opportunity to close a stubborn infrastructure gap and strengthen the digital foundations schools increasingly depend on. Our analysis shows where the opportunity is greatest, what changes operationally when connectivity improves, and what school and trust leaders should be thinking about now.
A stronger connection is valuable because it changes what a school can reliably depend on. The opportunity is not simply faster internet.
